On March 18th 2001, Warunee (co-founder and former co-admin) wrote on NS the following:

We have over 150 stories. Yes, we’re proud to say that we have the largest Chlex fanfic archive on the net.

Think of that, 150 stories. Now the entire fanfiction category on the forums contains (in written moment) 1600 stories (including the 457 currently in the graveyard)! Not bad! The oldest fanfiction posted by an user, that I could find, is Catheryne‘s Gotham: For One Kiss. (PG, Romance). It was posted on March 2nd, 2003 and is now archived in the Completed Romance section.

The beginning of Gotham: For One Kiss

i. Cold Grey Night

The blonde woman was unused to the freezing temperature. She huddled lower under her thick coat, shivering against the biting air of the dark city. She hurried down the street, desperately seeking for a warm stopover before continuing on her pointless wandering.

Chloe Sullivan lit up at the sight of a blinking sign that was so old that it flickered sporadically, hung dangerously at one end, and now only read C FF EHOU E. Despite the dubious appearance of the shop, Chloe needed her fix too badly to care. She hurried over to the establishment and looked down at the door handle. Grimy. She cringed. She would not have been the reporter that she had become if she would let possibly fatal germs bring her down though. She closed her gloved hand over it, mentally swearing to throw out the gloves before even stepping back into her newly leased very ancient apartment.

When she entered the shop, all eyes turned to her. She felt each of the customers look her over, weigh her really, without even turning their heads. It made her feel so uncomfortable, the way they measured her from the corners of their eyes, as though she were not even worthy enough of a full on appraisal. The coldness that made her shiver now had nothing to do with the weather, although it was even colder in here than it was out there if it were possible.

You can read the entire story on NS Forums – Gotham: For One Kiss.

Perhaps you’re a new member, or perhaps you’re a senior member of the NS Forums. Either way, not everyone remembers or knows the story about the chocolate cake, or how it came to life. If you’ve read older fanfictions on the forums, perhaps you’ve noticed some of them reference a certain chocolate cake? Here’s the story behind the infamous chocolate cake!

On February 6th 2003, LexLover (who’s still a member by the way!) asked the community the following question:

Could anyone tell me what the significance of the “chocolate cake” is. I can’t seem to find a referance in any off the episodes, but it is mentioned in a whopping number of chlex fan fics!

Warunee, the co-founder and former co-admin of NS replied shortly after the question was posed:

Oh my, this story goes way back in April (Here referenced to April 2002, Julie) or something. It’s a long story, but i’ll try and make it short.

At fanforum.com there’s a Chlex thread called ‘Truth Seekers’. At first the thread was really empty. Almost no one ever posted. So just for the fun of it, I told the lurkers they would get a cake if they came out. Suddenly the thread was filled with new posters, and I decided to post a picture of a big wedding cake. At that time, the regular Chlexers had a conversation about how fun it would be to see Lex seducing Chloe if he was infected by the Nicodemus flower.

Then Hope (still a member of NS Forums, hfce – Julie), one of the lurkers, (now a postaholic) said she promised to post more if she got chocolate cake instead. When I posted a picture of the chocolate cake, everyone went totally crazy (in a good way of course), and said how sexy it would be if Lex and Chloe seduced each other with chocolate frosting and all that stuff.

After that incident, chocolate cake has been some kind of ‘symbol’ representating Chlex.

I know, it’s crazy. Way beyond crazy. But it’s fun.

So there you have it, the story behind the chocolate cake!
