January 2010 Author Interview: Booksketeer

1) If you could visit any place at any time period, where would you go and what would you do?

Okay, this is going to sound really weird, but I would go back to April 14, 1865 and try to save Abraham Lincoln. I’ve always wondered about the butterfly effect, and what would happen if I could change a major point in history. I would have to choose that one.

Barring that, I’d at least be the one to collect the pistol used. Did you know that people just clustered about and picked up souvenirs? Seriously bad police work back then.

2) Have you ever met anyone famous?

The only fairly famous person I’d ever met was Carole Nelson Douglas, who is the author of the Midnight Louie series. She was doing a signing for ‘Cat on a Hyacinth Hunt‘ and it’s one of the last events I went to with my grandmother before she passed on, so while it’s not movie star equivalent, it’s very special to me.

3) If you could meet any famous person, alive or dead, who would it be and what would you say/do?

Wow. I’m probably a very shallow person for saying this, considering all the possibilities, but I’d love to just watch a magic show by Steve Valentine.

4) If you could switch lives with any person, who would you choose and why? If you want to switch with a person who is dead, we’ll assume that you wanted to live their life while he/she was alive.

And here’s the masochist coming out in me; I’d want to be Joan of Arc. To be that influential, in such a time period (especially a woman) that your name is known around the world; it’s just amazing. I’ve always found her story to be inspiring, despite her horrible end.

5) Who is your favorite author, alive or dead, and why?

Sir Arthur Conan Doyal. Growing up, my childhood hero was Sherlock Holmes, and I’d always wanted to be just like him. Barring, of course, ‘The Seven Percent Solution.’ I remain steadfast in my belief that he was never a cocaine addict, and Dr. Morarity (Yes, I know I spelled it wrong, sorry) is still a bad guy. I’d rather continue to believe Holmes died by his nemesis’ hand, than that it was all a drug induced hallucination.

6) What is your favorite book and why?

The Historian‘ by Elizabeth Kostova. Although you see Dracula for maybe five minutes out of the entire novel, the suspense and intrigue it is easily the best vampire novel I’ve come across. And I’m a big sucker for the vampire novel.

7) Who is your favorite singer, alive or dead, and why?

Lol. I’m reasonably sure nobody is going to know who they are, but it’s a duo called On/Off from Japan. They are really hot twins, with phenomenal voices, despite the fact I don’t have a clue what they’re saying.

8.)What is your favorite song and why?

The Last Night‘ by Skillet. I just feel that they are very strong lyrics that speak to me-just like anyone else’s favorite does.

9) What is your favorite movie and why?

Singing In the Rain.’ It’s the first romance movie I’d ever seen, and continues to be the only one I like.

10) What is your favorite television show and why?

Hands down, ‘Fringe.’ The infinite number of scientific possibilities in fringe sciences are just mind-boggling, and I am eagerly awaiting the second season. Also, the Walter character is awesome, no matter that he’s technically insane. Just adds to the character, really. And Joshua Jackson is still hot.

11) Who is your favorite actor/actress, alive or dead, and why?

Mary McCormick, of In Plain Sight. I don’t know if it’s the character, or if it’s the actress, I just really like how she’s such a wonderful mix of caring consideration, and hard-nosed, well, b****. (Sorry, didn’t know how else to put it. lol.)

12) What is the one movie/television show that you would never admit to family, friends, co-workers that you watch? Yes, I know asking defeats the point, but spill your guts anyway.

Oh, this is so embarrassing, I’m hoping that nobody reads this far-but here goes. I coerce my four year old into watching X-Men: Evolution with me so that my husband doesn’t know I like it.

13) Do people in your Real Life know that you are a member of NS?

Just my husband, because he frequently conscripts my laptop when he needs to fix his servers or websites, whatever gets messed up. So he teases me every time he sees the site up.

14) Do people in your Real Life know that you read/write fanfiction?

Lol. A good friend of mine from church was discussing Harry Potter (which makes this kind of funny, as our pastor has said he doesn’t approve of it), and the most embarrassing thing she’d done. So after her little story, I told her that I used to read HP fanfiction (it’s actually how I found this site, ) and she confessed she used to write it. I found that really funny. My husband knows, but doesn’t think too highly of it. My mother knows I write, but not what. Hm, and my four year old, but I don’t think she understands.

15) When did you first start reading fanfiction?

Years ago, I stumbled upon a Labyrinth fanfiction, and had quite forgotten what Labyrinth was (despite it being my favorite movie as a child). Once I figured it out, I started thinking of different fandoms that I wish had gone one way or the other, and…well, that was it.

16) When did you first get started in writing fanfiction?

Okay, I take back the comment I made previously- this is the most embarrassing. I wrote (and never finished, even though I knew where I wanted it to go) a YuGiOh fanfic oh, I think six years ago? Just because I had a thing for white-haired anime guys.

17) Is fanfic writing just a hobby for you or do you hope to go further with your writing?

I do hope to one day publish a few fantasy novels, but I don’t expect to be famous; it’d be just to get them out of my head. Other than that, writing is a treat for me, seeing how I rarely get time alone.

18) When you aren’t writing awesome fanfics, what do you do and/or want to be doing?

I like working with birds. Before our house burned down, I had one pair of Mitred Conures, a pair of lovebirds (with unique enough coloring that the animal control guy didn’t know what species to put down in his report-I thought that was weird.) a pair of Congos, and a pair of Sun Conures. I’ve always wanted to breed birds on the side of any job I got-but they’re pretty expensive, and our insurance didn’t cover them. Then again, now that I’ve got a second child, I don’t have time to start it up again just yet.

19) How and why did you first get interested in Chlex? What do you like most about the characters? What do you hate about them?

And here is where I explain my comment from question 14. I was reading Harry Potter fanfiction, and was kind of outgrowing it, I guess; just losing interest. But I still enjoyed reading stories from scifichick778. So I looked at her other stories, and found her Chlex section, and from there found this site. Lol. I like how different they are from each other, and the potential Chloe could reach with the help of someone as powerful, and dangerous as Lex. However, I really hate the way it seems so inevitable that they would find a way to seriously hurt each other, just because of the way their personalities and personal ethics would clash.

20) How and why did you first get interested in writing Chlex fanfiction?

Whenever I read anything, my mind always whispers ‘What if…’ and from there, a scene will pop into my head that I can’t get rid of until I write it down. Then I wonder how the characters get to that place, and how it would all fit together. It sounds kind of confusing, but it’s a lot of fun for me.

21) Is there anything while reading Chlex fanfiction that you really like/hate?

I really like it in stories when Lex comes to his senses and leaves Lana for Chloe, but it doesn’t come easy for him. He’s been such an idiot in the Lexana arc, that I feel he really needs to redeem himself. I really hate when they are immediately sappy and gushy, and just cavity inducing-ly stupid in love-unless it’s a fic written down the road in their relationship. But to start out that way just seems too out of character. I also hate when either Clark or Lana are just outrageously evil toward Chloe, unless it’s a humorous fic. They aren’t the kind of friends they’re supposed to be to her, but I really see that as a fault of the show writers than that of the actual characters.

22) What (if any) other fandoms do you read/write for and why?

I will occasionally still read HP stories, because scifichick still writes them, and I would rather read Hermione with anyone, in any crossover, even the big baddie in her own universe, than to have to accept she ended up with Ron. Yeah, I know, pretty pathetic, huh? The truth, nonetheless. Sometimes I’ll go to Labyrinth fanfiction, but not often.

23) What type of environment do you need to write? For example: extreme quiet, blaring music, subtle background noise, etc.

I really need quiet to start, then if I get stuck, I’ll put on some music, or more often, pull some music videos on youtube up, and often it’ll kick start my creative processes.

24) How do your ideas come to you? Do you always write them or do you let them disappear?

They often disappear on me before I can get to a place to write them down, unfortunately. On one memorable occasion, my husband caught me writing during a sermon at church; fortunately I had some notes to show him so I could claim I really was paying attention…lol. I laughed so hard once I made it to the restroom.

25) Do you plan a story from the beginning to end or start with an idea and let the chapters come to you as they do?

It always starts as a scene I’d like to see, then goes from there. What usually comes next is ‘How did they get there?’ and then ‘What haven’t I seen anyone else write?’. My endings are usually open ended, probably because I really don’t like finite endings. I like to think that the story can always go on.

26) Do you ever input certain aspects about yourself into the lives of Chloe and Lex? For example: Do you have Chloe listen to your favorite song or have Lex watch your favorite movie?

No. My personality, the choices I’d make, everything about me I think is contrary to either Lex or Chloe. It’s a pairing I love to read about, but can’t think I’d enjoy either character’s life, or make any of the decisions they do. Of course, if we’re going according to the show, I think that statement would be true for anyone with half a brain.

27) Do you associate your writing with any songs even if it isn’t a songfic?

Actually, sometimes the lyrics for a song will give me a scene to write, which is always interesting and curiously enough, not always to my taste. But it’s always fun.

28) Do you prefer writing easy, quick stories or long, layered stories?

I’m more of a middleman. I like writing medium length stories; not so little that you feel as though you’re thrown into the story and have to pick up clues to tell where they’re at, but not so long as to have to cycle through lots and lots of pages to re-read and correct. On the other hand, I enjoy reading any length.

29) Which do you find easier to write: dialogue or description or are the equally hard/easy?

Dialogue is easier, and funner for me. Every time I write description, I usually go over it several times and keep changing it because I don’t feel I’m painting the right picture as it’s being read.

30) Is there anything that you won’t write or feel uncomfortable writing?

I have a hard time with m/m slash. And after writing that, I feel kinda hypocritical because I can do f/f slash just fine. I guess, really, I don’t like that hole? I have a lot of respect for those who do though, because I’ve read some really well written m/m stuff.

31) What do you do to cure writer’s block? What advice can you give to new writers who might be scared to post their stories?

Sometimes watching youtube videos gives me ideas. I just go to most watched, and some things pop out at me-even if it’s not in sequential order, I can write a scene that comes after the scene I’m stuck on, then connecting the two is much easier because I can see where I’m going with it. But what works even better is getting online with pretty much anyone in the chat here and getting advice from them.

32) Have you ever read someone else’s fanfic and wished you thought of the idea first?

Lol! Yes! The only one that comes to mind is Dannyblue’s Smallville/Highlander fic. I never used to enjoy crossovers, but since reading that one, I’ve really gotten into them.

33) Have you ever wanted someone else to write your story idea?

Oh yeah. When I’ve got three or four ideas floating around, and I just really want to see one of them come to fruition, but I’ve got these two already working on…yeah. Definitely. Haven’t gotten the balls to ask anyone yet though.

34) Are reviews vital to keep you writing or will you finish a story even if you aren’t certain people are reading?

Reviews are certainly encouraging; in fact, when writing on Fanfiction.net, I’d often keep the ones emailed to me just because they gave me the warm fuzzies (My preciousssssss). But I finish a story because the story itself nags at me, and I can’t get it off my mind until I finish it.

35) Have you ever had a review that made you think something about your story that you never thought of before? Has a review ever made you want to make a major change to your story?

In the last fanfic battle, one of the reviewers saw the story I wrote in a completely different light than what I initially intended; after re-reading it with her viewpoint in mind, it not only made sense, but I liked it better. Which reminds me; I need to thank her…

36) How badly do you want to write for Smallville or at least rewrite some of the seasons?

Nope. Not me. But I’d love to kidnap some of the authors here and have them write the shows. And picturing that has put quite the smile on my face.

37) Do you see Chloe and Lex or other Smallville characters in different television shows or movies? Meaning, do you watch a movie like Star Wars and start thinking that Lex is just like Han Solo?

No, but I did just watch Superman for the first time, and I have to say that I like how MR portrayed Lex much better than GH. That Lex was kinda campy compared to Smallville’s.

38) What do you think AM and MR would say about your fics if they read them? How would you feel if someone from the show did read your writings?

…Dear God, please no.

39) If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? Would you use it for good or evil?

I would like to be able to read people’s minds, at will. Mostly because I want to know the whole truth, not just what people want known…although it does cross my mind that being able to do so would make it a lot easier to manipulate others… (insert evil laugh). Yeah, I’d fall to the temptation to use my powers for evil. I’m only human.
