1) If you could visit any place at any time period, where would you go and what would you do?

I think I’d go back in time, rather than forward – the Regency period in England would be awesome (think Jane Austen!). To be honest though, I think I’d get bored pretty quickly with all the social hierarchies and the need to be uber-polite… it’s a very romantic notion to live in that period, but I was definitely born at the right time!

2) Have you ever met anyone famous?

Joe Pasquale. Briefly. He’s an English comedian with a squeaky voice. Bit of a pathetic claim to fame really! My firm acts for a lot of English celebs going through divorces though, so I live vicariously

3) If you could meet any famous person, alive or dead, who would it be and what would you say/do?

I’d quite like to have tea and crumpets with the Queen! No idea what I’d say to her, but it would definitely make a good anecdote at dinner parties.

4) If you could switch lives with any person, who would you choose and why? If you want to switch with a person who is dead, we’ll assume that you wanted to live their life while he/she was alive.

Hmmm…. I’m happy as I am!

5) Who is your favorite author, alive or dead, and why?

Charlaine Harris – I’ve only read the Sookie Stackhouse novels so far (twice), but I’m totally hooked.

6) What is your favorite book and why?

Probably Pride and Prejudice as I’ve read it so many times. Elizabeth is such a strong, complex heroine, it’s timelessly romantic and so beautifully written.

7) Who is your favorite singer, alive or dead, and why?

Nina Simone – her voice is so incredible, her music hits the spot every time.

8.) What is your favorite song and why?

Teardrop by Massive Attack. There’s just something about the combination of the drum beat, harpsicord, piano and haunting vocals that gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. I was very nervous about doing a video to it.

9) What is your favorite movie and why?

This is so difficult!! If I have to plump for one, I’d say American Beauty – when I first watched it, it had a really profound effect on me and it just inspired me to live every moment of my “stupid little life” to the full. Labyrinth (the David Bowie film) would be a very close second: it was the first internet community that I took part in, and I can pretty much quote the entire film.

10) What is your favorite television show and why?

Smallville used to be the only one on the podium, but thanks to the one or two duff seasons, I’d say True Blood is my favourite, closely followed by Misfits. I also love The Vampire Diaries, Merlin and Doctor Who… Oh, I used to love a show called The 10th Kingdom too, but I bet most people haven’t heard of that one… All it takes is a good ‘ship and I’m hooked (e.g. Eric/Sookie, Ashley/Future!Simon, Elena/Damon, Arthur/Gwen, Doctor/Rose, Virginia/Wolf)

11) Who is your favorite actor/actress, alive or dead, and why?

I think it’s a tie between Sir Anthony Hopkins and Kevin Spacey. They’re just so brilliant!!

12) What is the one movie/television show that you would never admit to family, friends, co-workers that you watch? Yes, I know asking defeats the point, but spill your guts anyway.

If I find a show I like, however embarrassing, I want everyone to watch it! I’ve even got my mum hooked on True Blood (“ooh, that Eric’s a right B isn’t he?”)…

13) Do people in your Real Life know that you are a member of NS?

My boyfriend knows all about it as he lives with me: my computer is hooked up to my big TV so there can be no secrets!!!

14) Do people in your Real Life know that you create fan videos?

My boyfriend has to suffer through my hours of editing, and he grumbles when I hog the TV to do it! He’s very supportive though. My best friend has watched most of my videos, my brother’s watched a few, but that’s about it – I’d be a bit embarrassed having a screening of my back catalogue with Mum and Dad!

15) When did you first start reading fanfiction?

Back around 1998/9 when I was at Uni – I started to hunt down fanfiction for Labyrinth and it got me hooked into the whole fan world. I also wrote fanfic for it too. It was one of the main reasons I first came to NS, and the rest is history…

16) When did you first get started in creating fan videos?

After I joined NS, I watched a few of the music videos on the boards – it was the first time I’d seen anything like it, and I was completely mesmerised by seeing a fictional ‘ship come to life. I think I made my first one ‘A Cinderella Story’ in late 2003/early 2004.

17) Is creating fan videos just a hobby for you or do you do more with your video making skills?

I love a good challenge – my boyfriend is a graphic designer, so I often animate his drawings and I want to do a more formal collaboration with him soon and might get to help with/do some of his paid client work. I’ve also created funny videos for my synchronised ice skating team to boost team morale, and have done some motion graphics to break complex moves down and animate where each individual needs to go. Oh, I filmed and edited a music video for an old friend a few years ago who was a songwriter – that was so much fun! Sadly, I haven’t made any money from it yet!

18) When you aren’t making awesome fan videos, what do you do and/or want to be doing?

When I’m not working, vidding or sleeping, I’m ice skating… I’ve been an ice dancer for 3 or 4 years now, and am team captain of the local adult synchro team which I helped to form. I love being on the ice – it makes me feel like I’m flying! Plus, my boyfriend is an amazing ice dancer, so we get to play with lifts too. Oh, and I love, LOVE making cupcakes. I’m such a girl.

19) How and why did you first get interested in Chlex? What do you like most about the characters? What do you hate about them?

It’s been so long that I can hardly remember! I think it was towards the end of the first season that I came across a site called Fire and Ice which was devoted to chlex: I just thought what an awesome pairing it was, and something clicked! I loved Chloe’s spirit and intelligence, and I found Lex interesting because he seemed so different to the legend that he would ultimately become and I knew he had an interesting journey ahead of him. I honestly don’t hate anything about either character, though wasn’t too hot about Lexana or Chimmy.

20) How and why did you first get interested in making Chlex fan videos?

It never occurred to me to make anything else! I was totally obsessed with chlex at the time that I started learning how to vid.

21) Is there anything while watching Chlex fan videos that you really like/hate?

I do have a couple of things that bug me about videos in general which I consider bad editing, but vids on NS are usually second to none. I love watching AU videos and getting lost in the storyline, or being surprised thinking ‘hang on, when did THAT happen on the show?!’

22) What (if any) other fandoms do you make fan videos for and why?

It was a few years before I branched out, but now I’ll do anything! I’ve made vids for Harry Potter, Phantom of the Opera, Doctor Who, True Blood, Pride and Prejudice, and even one about my favourite ice dancers, Torvill & Dean! There isn’t really a reason, it’s just to tell a story, highlight a theme or generally get an idea out of my head!

23) What type of environment do you need to create your videos? For example: extreme quiet, blaring music, subtle background noise, etc.

I need to listen to the music as I’m editing, and scrub through it frame by frame to make sure I cut on the beats. It drives my boyfriend round the bend. I find it quite distracting if I’m listening to anything else – I must be a nightmare to live with, but I bake a lot which evens things out.

24) How do your ideas come to you? Do you always create videos for them or do you let them disappear?

If I have a vid idea that I really want to do, I always write it down – I have a vidding book (with an apt picture of a mad cow on the front) just for this purpose. I also have lots of little notepad files in a notepad on my computer with snippets of lyrics/scene ideas in. The most fully formed and persistent ideas always get made, otherwise they won’t leave my head!

25) When and how did your collaboration with Zannie start in making videos for her fanfics?

I’d already made a vid for Fiona’s Sanguis Quid Ligurat and absolutely loved the challenge of being constrained by someone else’s story, so when I fell in love with Zannie’s ‘Irrevocable’ I really wanted to do the same. I think Zannie had liked a few of my vids already, so I tentatively asked and she said yes!!! It was such an amazing opportunity to work with her on it – I sent her the music, and bits of scenes as I was doing it to make sure it fitted with what was in her head. When I started reading Untouchable, I was already making notes for a video during the first chapter! She’s such an amazing author that her words leap to life – it makes vidding very easy and I just found it immensely satisfying

26) Do you plan a video from the beginning to end or do you start with an idea and let the choices for clips and effects come to you while working on the video?

My first few vids were a bit anarchic – I started with the first scene and went where it took me. I soon realised that I much preferred the outcome if I put a bit more planning in to get the storyline sorted first. I listen to the song on repeat dozens (and dozens) of times until I can watch the vid in my head – I split the song up into scenes and chapters according to it’s pace and mood, then I write everything down and make a shopping list of clips. I don’t mind changing small things as I’m editing if I find something works better, but on the whole, I tend to have it all mapped out before I even start choosing my clips.
27) What software do you use or have used to create your fanvideos?

I started with Windows Movie Maker for the first three or four vids, and then moved over to Adobe Premiere LE. I now use Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 for the editing, Adobe After Effects CS3 for any special effects or motion graphics (like the advent trailer), and I still use Adobe Photoshop CS for any manipulations I need. I also edit my own music sometimes too, and I use a program called Audacity for that.

28) How do you pick the songs to feature in your videos? Do you find a song to fit the video or do you fit the video to a song?

The idea usually comes first, then I have to hunt for a piece of music to match it, which can be a real pain. Occasionally, the music comes first such as for ‘Drifting Away’ and ‘I Bruise Easily’.

29) Which video was the most difficult to create and why?

Bachelorette. Hands down. It was the last vid in the chlex/chruce/chlark trilogy and I had so many characters and plotlines to resolve in under 5 and a half minutes it gave me such a headache!!! It took me months to figure out how to get to the big fight scene at the end. To add to this, I’d used up all the ‘easy’ scene manipulations in the first two vids, so I really had to drag this vid kicking and screaming to the finishing post. I think it took over a year to plan and then months to edit.

30) Which video are you most proud of and why?

‘All is Full of Love’ as it was selected to be screened at Vividcon 2007 in Chicago, which is an annual convention for fanvids showcasing work from some of the best vidders around. It was shown in the ‘Daughters of the Experimental’ session which featured vids that “stand out for unusual style or technique, that take risks and experiment with effects, storytelling techniques, music, etc”. Even now, I can’t quite believe it! I’d love to go one day.

31) Is there anything that you won’t feature in a video or feel uncomfortable putting in a video?

No. I tend to create vids for myself, so if it’s something I want to watch, I’ll vid it!

32) What do you do if/when you have a mental block while making a video? What advice can you give to new vid makers who might be scared to post their fanvids?
If I get vidder’s block, it’s a case of never give up, never surrender! If I’m struggling plot-wise, I write things on bits of paper and shuffle them around until I work out a storyboard in my head. If I’m having trouble editing, it’s usually the music that isn’t quite right so I try something different.

Vidders must never be scared to post their work!!! Especially on such a friendly forum like NS. My first vids were a bit raw and I was nervous about posting them, but it’s so encouraging when you get feedback and when you can see that people are watching your work – you get a real buzz from it and it pushes you to get better and do more.

33) Have you ever seen someone else’s fan video and wished you thought of the idea first?

Deconstruction by hirukodark – it’s an 8-minute chlex/chlark vid where Lex wipes Chloe’s mind and convinces her that they’re a couple. It’s fantastic.

34) Have you ever wanted someone else to make your fan video concept?

Usually when I have an idea I’m excited about doing it myself. Fee (staysixkid) and I used to swap songs and bounce ideas around all the time though.

35) Are reviews vital to keep you creating fan videos or will you continuing making fan videos to entertain yourself?

Comments really, really help. I do create for myself, but the thing that keeps me going is imagining other people’s reactions when they see things. In the advent calendar 2010 vid, for example, there are a couple of scene manipulations that I think are going to get a few people excited, so I’m eager to know what people think! Vids usually take me at least a month to do, often two or more, so I invest a lot of my free time. It’s quite disheartening to see a high ‘view’ count with no feedback as you wonder if people are enjoying it and if your hard work paid off. I’d still muster on for a bit without feedback, but it would be really hard.

36) Have you ever had a review that made you think something about your video that you never thought of before? Has a review ever made you want to make a major edit to your video?

I once saw a thread (not on NS) that was discussing Teardrop and one person said that they didn’t like the ‘pro-life’ angle of the vid. I was really surprised by this as it never even entered my head to be pro-life or pro-choice – I just wanted to tell a story about Lex and Chloe having a baby and overcoming adversity in the form of a meddling Lionel Luthor. I was quite upset, but realised that it was up to the viewer if they wanted to read something into a vid – it’s wrong of me to assume that people will always view things the way I intend. Ultimately, I still loved the vid, so I didn’t change anything.

37) Do you catalogue certain Smallville (or any fandom) scenes so you know exactly where to find a clip of someone smiling/crying/etc.? Or do keep the whole video files intact and rewatch them to find the necessary scenes?

I have a catalogue of scene fillers, such as shots of the daily planet, the torch and so on, but I try not to catalogue anything else as they would get overused. I tend to know SV really well, so I know which eps I need to rip for particular things. If I’m struggling, I scan through the DVDs to find what I need. It’s different for films, as I watch them a few times with my trusty ‘mad cow’ book and write notes on which scenes/clips I need to grab.

38) Do you see Chloe and Lex or other Smallville characters in different television shows or movies? Meaning, do you watch a movie like Star Wars and start thinking that Lex is just like Han Solo? If so, would you make a video based on that idea?

Not really, but I do often pair them up with characters from other shows/films! Watch this space :-p

39) What do you think AM and MR would say about your videos if they watched them? How would you feel if someone from the show did watch your videos?

I’m sure Allison and Michael would be very embarrassed at the raunchier bits, but I hope they’d like them! I would be absolutely over the moon if anyone even remotely associated with the show watched one of my vids, unless they were on the hunt for copyright infringers…

40) If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? Would you use it for good or evil?

I’d love to be able to travel in time and would use it purely for selfish reasons, so that I could vid, skate, work, sleep AND spend time with my long-suffering boyfriend!

1) If you could visit any place at any time period, where would you go and what would you do?

I think I’d stay where I am (upper Midwest U.S.) & go back about 12,000 years. It would be very cool to see all the animals that are now extinct in North America – the mammoths & camels & llamas, etc.
2) Have you ever met anyone famous?

Garrison Keillor. Does that count?

3) Who is your favorite author, alive or dead, and why?

Agatha Christie – I think I’ve probably read everything she’s written. Even as a kid I enjoyed how character-driven her mysteries are — the big revel always involves some secret about the murderer’s psyche.

4) What is your favorite book and why?

Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson.

5) Who is your favorite singer, alive or dead, and why?

Billie Holiday. My favorite album of all time is “Lady in Satin”. Her voice was pretty much shot by then but nobody else could do what she could with a song.

Of all time, probably X-Files. Right now the only thing I tune for live is Community. I tried watching Fringe the first season and couldn’t get into it, but I’ve heard good things about it, so I may try that out again.

Dead? Kate Hepburn. Alive? Cate Blanchett. Guys it’s harder. I think James Cagney, Dead, and Robert Downey Jr., Alive.

I don’t really tell people I watched Smallville. Usually I get a reaction that boils down to “Seriously?” and I’m not at the point where I can defend the show anymore.

10) Do people in your Real Life know that you read/write fanfiction?

My husband knows, and a few friends. I mostly keep quiet about irl because I teach Sunday School for some senior high students, a few of whom are SV fans and seem to be active in fandom, and while sexuality is one of the issues that gets discussed in class I’m not too sure most of their parents want their kids reading the smut I’ve written. I’m also pretty sure it would creep most of the kids out to know that I had.

11) When did you first start reading fanfiction?

About four years ago I really got into Harry Potter fanfic in a big way, then switched over to Smallville about a year and a half ago.

12) When did you first get started in writing fanfiction?

I’m not usually inspired to write anything for shows/books/movies I enjoy. If I enjoy something I just want to enjoy it for what it is.

Occasionally I’ll enjoy something mostly, but there will be one or two or several things about it that bother me, and I’ll get the itch to “fix” it. Or at least bring/up acknowledge the thing that bothers me (I’ve noticed this seems to be true for a lot of people who write Smallville fic.) The first time I wrote something, it was a little drabble, was just the most amazing feeling. It was like hiking to the top of some ridge and seeing the view from the top and knowing that sense of accomplishment.

13) Is fanfic writing just a hobby for you or do you hope to go further with your writing?

The great thing about fanfic is that I set my own deadlines. Writing fiction for a living would require me to develop a lot more discipline than I have now.

14) When you aren’t writing awesome fanfics, what do you do and/or want to be doing?

I like knitting, cooking, yoga. My husband and I bike & back-pack together, and we also enjoy watching previous seasons of shows that aired on cable channels we don’t have. Right now I’m in the middle of seasons 2 of Mad Men and Weeds. I’m also slowly and painfully learning a little bit about photo manipulation.

15) How and why did you first get interested in Chlex? What do you like most about the characters? What do you hate about them?

Chlex as I see it is — or can be — a fascinating coupling. They are so alike in some ways — they’re both curious, driven people with self-esteem problems, and how they handle those problems that differentiates them, I think. Chloe has developed a habit of repressing her wants in the name of the greater good, while Lex tends to use money as insurance against rejection. So Chloe becomes sort of self-righteous and Lex becomes arrogant, and its whether they can see past those bad habits in the other that I think determines whether they would be able to come together. What adds an additional layer to the clash of personalities is that a lot of other people are materially affected by the decisions the two of them make, so there are a lot of potentially dangerous external consequences to their relationship (as there were, for instance, for Lionel). There’s a lot riding on their verbal judo.

16) How and why did you first get interested in writing Chlex fanfiction?

Like a lot of people, I think, I was very interested in the Chlex relationship in season 3 and was extremely disappointed with how it failed to develop in season 4. Then I sorta gave up on it until season 9 rolled around and Chloe paid to have the kryptonite weapons made. For some reason, unlike all the other Chloe/Lex comparisons they tried to make that season, that one struck me as actually being Lex-like and I started to wonder what could have happened if Lex and Chloe had re-entered each others’ lives at that point.

17) Is there anything while reading Chlex fanfiction that you really like/hate?

I enjoy reading Lex’s POV; it doesn’t seem as if there are many people who do write from his perspective, so it’s a treat when someone does.

18) What (if any) other fandoms do you read/write for and why?

I’ve written other Chloe ships, but not for other shows. I write so slowly I think I can really only handle one fandom at a time.

19) What type of environment do you need to write? For example: extreme quiet, blaring music, subtle background noise, etc.

I need quiet, which stinks, because I would love to be able to write on slow days at work. I can sometimes write to music, but any spoken language in the back-ground will kill my train of thought.

20) How do your ideas come to you? Do you always write them or do you let them disappear?

I try to write every idea down, although I don’t always use it in a fic. I have some great single scenes (well, I think they’re great) that will probably never make it into a finished story.

21) Do you plan a story from the beginning to end or start with an idea and let the chapters come to you as they do?

My first multi-chapter story I had a definite objective and I knew what I wanted to do to get there. My other multi-chapter stories are a little more open-ended. I know that I want certain events to happen, but I’m not entirely sure how that will come to pass, and then sometimes when I’m in the middle of it it’ll come to me, “Oh, that’s how that’ll happen.”

I think my main problem is that I’m constantly asking myself, “But would this person really DO this thing I’ve got planned for them to do? Why?” and it gets hard to move on with the story until I’ve answered that question.

22) Do you ever input certain aspects about yourself into the lives of Chloe and Lex? For example: Do you have Chloe listen to your favorite song or have Lex watch your favorite movie?

I haven’t in my Chlex stories. In other stories I’ve written Chloe mysteriously knows a lot of the same poems I do.

23) Do you associate your writing with any songs even if it isn’t a songfic?

I have a whole Pandora station devoted to a story I’m working on now; it’s based on a fanmix the person who asked for the story put together, and it’s a real kick to see how many new songs get kicked out that just fit the theme perfectly.

24) Do you prefer writing easy, quick stories or long, layered stories?

Shorter pieces are fun because they’re a quick hit and they allow me to play with mood. Longer pieces are more of a challenge. Sometimes I’m up for a challenge & sometimes I’m not.

25) Which do you find easier to write: dialogue or description or are the equally hard/easy?

Dialogue. That always comes first. I really struggle with exposition; I dislike reading it in large chunks and so I try to find ways to chop it into small pieces in my stories, which can be difficult.

26) Is there anything that you won’t write or feel uncomfortable writing?

Writing from a male pov has been always been a little scary for me. I’m trying to do it more, get out of my little box. Similarly, I haven’t written any slash, because what do I know about the way men experience their bodies? So I’m saving that for someday when I want to really push my boundaries.

27) What do you do to cure writer’s block? What advice can you give to new writers who might be scared to post their stories?

I have the worst cure for writer’s block: I start working on something else. All my short moody pieces were written in between chapters of longer stuff.

28) Have you ever read someone else’s fanfic and wished you thought of the idea first?

All the time. I also frequently think, “Gosh, this person is a great stylist, I wish I could write like that” or “This person has such insight into these characters, I wish I did too” or “I wish I could write clever, twisty plots like this”, etc., etc.

29) Are reviews vital to keep you writing or will you finish a story even if you aren’t certain people are reading?

I love reviews. Probably the best review I ever got was from someone who very nicely told me that she didn’t get the point I was trying to make and we had a good discussion about it. That was fun. But I would write & post even if I didn’t get them, since I’m mostly writing to combat what I see as the stupidity of this show.

30) Have you ever had a review that made you think something about your story that you never thought of before? Has a review ever made you want to make a major change to your story?

I’ve had a couple of one-shots turn into something much longer because of comments.

31) How badly do you want to write for Smallville or at least rewrite some of the seasons?

Badly.

32) Do you see Chloe and Lex or other Smallville characters in different television shows or movies? Meaning, do you watch a movie like Star Wars and start thinking that Lex is just like Han Solo?

In my mind Inception was all about the Lex/Lionel relationship.

Telekinesis. I’m extremely lazy.

There are many stars I’d love to meet! But one that I almost had a chance but he died was Kevin Smith (Ares: God of War)! And living, no question! Jensen Ackles!!!! He’s my favorite actor. I’d just don’t know how I’d react or what I’d say!

I don’t have any one person in mind. I know I wouldn’t want to be famous. I’d live to switch lives with someone who’s beautiful and maybe wealthy. I love to travel, and being wealthy would help.

Heather Graham, I fell madly into with her book Ghost Walk. She’s a great mystery suspense author!

Ghost Walk by Heather Graham, it’s realistic but at the same time its not!

I love country music and have many favorites. But if I had to choose just one, I’d go for Carry Underwood.

I’m not sure how they come to me! But when they do, I’ll think about it for a few days and turn them into stories in my head then start typing them out til I have nothing left!

I get the idea and start typing, then slowly let more chapters come to mind.

Not like that example. I see the actors/actress and remember them from the show. But I have done that with real life. My best friend’s name is Josh and he reminds me of Pete from time to time. And like I said before, Chloe reminds me of me a little.

I’d be SHOCKED! And scared! I’m not that great of a writer and I’d be afraid they laugh at my stuff.

 It was during Magnetic when Lex urged Chloe not to bite of more than she could chew in regards to his father. Sparks. Sparks were in the air with that dead man on the table in the cold morgue. I imagined in my head instantly that they embraced passionately as they fell to the ground. My head has never been wrong about a couple. Never.

 I was waiting for it to happen on the show. And when there was that explosion with Chloe and Lex drank that poison, I knew I had to act fast to keep my heart from breaking.

 I love obsessed Lex. I love Chloe just in general. I don’t hate anything about Chlex.

 I used to hit the HP fanfic like an addict back in the early high school days. And I wrote for it too. Oneshots. Yuppers.

 I need adequate time. And snacks within reach with the television playing a rerun of SVU.

 I let them disappear. When I write them down, I feel burdened to write them out. And then I can’t finish and I feel guilty. It’s best to let them go.

 I let the chapters smack me around a while.

 Yes. I input a lot of my fashion sense onto Chloe. Nothing very out of character, but I like her in pencil skirts and high heels ALL THE TIME. I can’t connect with Lex as well. I’m very nice and nurturing in real life and I try not to accidentally make him that way.

 Sure do. I like pretending that I can make ChlexVids and what songs I would use. And then it just becomes an idea for a fic.

 They are both hard. But I prefer writing description.

 There’s a cure?! Post it anyway even if you’re scared. Believe that people are innately good-hearted and excited to help and all you have to fear in life are natural disasters.

 Yes. Yes, I do that all the time. I like thinking that Lex and Chloe are the leads in any Asian Drama I watch because it’s a good fit. Finding Mr. Perfect? That has Lex and Chloe ALL over it.

34) What do you think AM and MR would say about your fics if they read them? How would you feel if someone from the show did read your writings?

 They would get dirty ideas and look at one another with a new light. Or that’s what I wish.

35) If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? Would you use it for good or evil?

 I would like to walk through walls. At first, I would use it for evil. I would rob a few banks. But then, I would feed the poor all over the world.

There seem to have been a few times and places that were a nexus of art, civilization, politics, philosophy and history. Those are the times I would visit – Athens at the time of Socrates, Byzantium at the time of Justinian and Theodora, Florence at the time of Michelangelo and the Medicis. I wouldn’t want to stay in any of those places long-term though. I like my computer and my ibuprofen too much.
2) Have you ever met anyone famous?

Not really. I talked to Jimmy Buffet in a traffic jam in Knoxville, TN once. And I’m acquainted with some semi-famous writers.

3) Who is your favorite author, alive or dead, and why?

I can’t narrow it down to one. Poets are harder for me to decide between, but my favorite novelists are probably Charlotte Bronte and Guy Gavriel Kay.

4) What is your favorite book and why?

I can’t decide on one for this either. But the books that have had the greatest impact on me are Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and Guy Gavriel Kay’s Tigana. I really think Little Women helped shape the way I understood myself growing up. And reading Tigana is, hands down, the most emotionally powerful experience I’ve ever had with a book.

5) What is your favorite television show and why?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favorite. I think it’s probably the best written show I’ve ever watched and it’s one that I still find incredibly compelling. I also loved the first three seasons of The West Wing and the first two seasons of Alias.

6) Do people in your Real Life know that you are a member of NS?

Just my sister.

7) Do people in your Real Life know that you read/write fanfiction?

Just my sister. I have an academic career and reputation that wouldn’t work well with fanfiction notoriety. Although, I’ll say that I know (either directly or indirectly) of many, many other professional academics who read or write fanfiction.

8.) When did you first decide to move from writing fanfiction to writing professionally? Had you always planned to write professionally and fanfic was the hobby or did the transition come through writing fanfic?

I actually started with professional fiction writing. I’ve written all my life, and I had a few different fiction manuscripts that were agented and marketed, but my fiction has never been a good fit for genre conventions so nothing really panned out. So I was burned out on writing for a few years before I randomly started writing fanfiction, and that really helped me cultivate the craft of narrative and revived my love for writing. It was a natural move to go back to writing professionally.

9) How did you find the place to sell your work? Was there major research involved or just a bit of fate & faith?

I’ve done a lot of market research now, but honestly, when I first submitted Renaissance to EC, I’d done almost no research. EC seemed to be the biggest publisher of erotic romance, so I just submitted a proposal. A lot of luck involved there. EC wasn’t a good long-term fit for me though and neither was erotic romance. The genre is unfortunately limited in terms of depth and quality. Some of it is very well-written (a lot of it isn’t) but few readers are looking for fiction with any depth – and that’s where I’m not a good fit.

10) How much effort was involved in switching a work over from Chlex fanfiction to Original work?

Some of the stories weren’t (or wouldn’t have been) hard –Renaissance was fairly AU as it was and the Smallville backstory wasn’t a significance feature in the fic. But even Nameless, which I still think might have had potential, was harder than I expected. I found it easier to just start from scratch and write original fiction.

11) How did you choose which stories would work best for Original fiction?

I only chose stories that fit basically into the romance genre narrative pattern (many of my stories don’t) and that aren’t as deeply ingrained in the Smallville canon. Irrevocable and Untouchable would have been impossible since the entire plot is grounded in events on the show. Anything that includes Clark as a superhero makes it difficult too.

12) Are you currently working on any writing: fanfiction or original?

I’ve been working primarily on nonfiction for the last year or two. It’s good for my career and I’m actually making money with it, but I just don’t have the passion for nonfiction that I do for fiction, so I’ve got to get back to fiction pretty soon.

13) Which story (stories), fanfiction or original, are you most proud of? Which took the most effort to write? Which gave the best fan response?

In terms of fanfiction, I’m probably most proud of Irrevocable. I really like how it came together. And it’s one of the stories I want to go back and reread the most. I also love rereading Road Tripping (although I fully recognize its limitations). And In Experience turned out far, far better than I ever expected when I started. As far as my original erotic fiction is concerned, I think Complicated is the best – and I was thrilled that I managed to develop a full story in so few chapters.

14) What (if any) other fandoms do you read/write for and why?

I wrote a couple of Harry Potter stories, but that was mostly for my sister (who is a huge HP fan). I’ve briefly considered some other fandoms but nothing has inspired me like Chlex.

15) What type of environment do you need to write? For example: extreme quiet, blaring music, subtle background noise, etc.

It honestly doesn’t matter. I can write with the television on or off, at a desk or on my couch or on my bed. Eating, drinking or none of the above. The only thing I rarely do is play music when I write. I don’t know why – I just never have.

16) How do your ideas come to you? Do you always write them or do you let them disappear?

I get ideas all the time – most of them never turn into stories. Sometimes, if I particularly like an idea, I’ll keep coming back to it and try developing it in my brain. If I can’t let it go, that’s when I’ll start writing it. I actually still have a couple of Chlex ideas that I’d love to write, if I ever go through another Chlex phase.

17) Do you ever input certain aspects about yourself into the lives of Chloe and Lex? For example: Do you have Chloe listen to your favorite song or have Lex watch your favorite movie?

Yes, yes, yes, of course. I think this is inevitable. I think the farther my stories went into AU, the more this happened (either intentionally or not). For instance, Chloe in Renaissance and Glow was more like me than Chloe in the Lessons stories or Road Tripping. I think my Lex’s sense of humor is a lot like mine – more so than we actually see on the show. And I would often throw in things I was interested in while writing. I was going through a Provence love-affair when I wrote Glow. I was teaching Victorian literature when I wrote Irrevocable. That sort of thing.

18) Do you associate your writing with any songs even if it isn’t a songfic?

Never. I don’t know why. I love music but it has never really inspired me creatively. I’ve never even considered writing a songfic.

19) Do you prefer writing easy, quick stories or long, layered stories?

I think the answer to this one should be fairly obvious to anyone who has read my stories.

20) Which do you find easier to write: dialogue or description or are the equally hard/easy?

Dialogue is by far the easiest for me. Sex scenes are the hardest. Narration, exposition, description, action etc. fall somewhere in the middle, depending on the story context and my mood.

21) Is there anything that you won’t write or feel uncomfortable writing?

I’m not sure there is any content I would consider completely off-limits. I have trouble writing sex scenes of things I don’t find personally sexy (the anal sex scene in terza rima was incredibly hard for me to write). The only things I would say I’d never write are things I’d consider morally wrong (like rape that is written as eroticized or something like that).

22) What advice can you give to new writers who might be scared to post their stories?

Writing is only half-done if it isn’t shared. While writing for oneself can be good practice or can be therapeutic, that’s all it can be if you aren’t willing to let other people read it. It’s scary but it’s worth it.

23) Have you ever read someone else’s fanfic and wished you thought of the idea first?

Yes, occasionally. But usually the ideas I like are from writers I really respect, so I know they handled them better than I would have.

24) Have you ever wanted someone else to write your story idea?

Never. For some reason, that has never occurred to me.

25) Have you ever had a review that made you think something about your story that you never thought of before? Has a review ever made you want to make a major change to your story?

Absolutely – both praise and criticism has helped me think about my stories better and more deeply than I might have otherwise. I’ve never significantly changed a story because of one review or even a lot of reviews. I generally stick to the plan I started with, but the nuances of my fics were often influenced by reviews. I think those of you who have read my fics from the beginning can see where I’ve responded to reviewers’ questions or concerns in the story itself. I also like to make shout-outs in my stories to reviewers or reviews.

26) How badly do you want to write for Smallville or at least rewrite some of the seasons?

The problem with writing Smallville is that I’d have to mess around with characters who are less than interesting to me. I would have written a ChLuthor spin-off in a heartbeat, though.

27) Do you see Chloe and Lex or other Smallville characters in different television shows or movies? Meaning, do you watch a movie like Star Wars and start thinking that Lex is just like Han Solo?

I don’t do this very often. I have noticed that the male characters I generally like the most are sort of like Lex and that the female characters I usually respond to are kind of like Chloe.

28) What do you think AM and MR would say about your fics if they read them? How would you feel if someone from the show did read your writings?

I don’t really know! I think I might be kind of embarrassed since I put their characters in so many graphic sex scenes.

1) If you could visit any place at any time period, where would you go and what would you do?

No laughing.

I used to always dream of living during medieval times. Knights in shining armor and huge, sprawling castles. Fair maidens in gorgeous gowns and fire breathing dragons (hush! In my world, they existed). Perilous quests and broadswords. Of course, eventually I realized that all the romantic aspects of my fantasies, besides being probably mostly historically inaccurate, weren’t really worth the almost non-existent sanitation and hygiene.

Now I think I’d rather visit Woodstock, though there probably wasn’t a huge improvement in the sanitation and hygiene departments. I’ve always felt that if I was around in the 60′s I’d have been a hippie for sure. All that peace and love and long, flowing skirts, flowers in your hair, and best of all, really, really great music!

2) Have you ever met anyone famous?

Does Morris the cat (or one of the felines who played him anyway) count? If not, then no.

Though, when I was 15 I did nearly meet the members of Mr. Big. The mother of one of my good friends was the lead singer’s cousin and we were supposed to go backstage after the show. Unfortunately, the band was exhausted and had a lot of driving to do to get to their next gig, so instead we each got a rose from them and that was that.

I never met them myself but the cast of North Country was in our little town for a couple months a few years back. The movie’s based on a true story that happened here so a number of scenes were filmed up this way. There was a casting call beforehand, and everyone from the area was encouraged to try out for bit roles. I didn’t make it but my husband did and you can catch a glimpse of him during a town hall meeting. While they were here, the actors hung around town a lot and a friend of mine partied at one of the local bowling alleys with Woody Harrelson.

3) If you could meet any famous person, alive or dead, who would it be and what would you say/do?

Shallow answer first:

David Tennant. As for what I’d say/do…I know we’re all adults here, but I’m thinking that’s probably TMI. Or better yet, David Tennant, James Marsters, and Michael Rosenbaum, all at the same time. Oh, yeah, baby!

Non-shallow answer:

John Lennon. He was such an amazing singer/songwriter, and all around fascinating person. I’d love to have the chance to just sit down and talk with him about everything from music to his world views.

Hm. I guess there’s no one specific but I’ve always wanted to be a good singer so I suppose I’d pick someone with a really amazing voice.

5) Who is your favorite author, alive or dead, and why?

That’s a tough one. Partly because I have a hard time picking favorites, and partly because lately all I read is fanfic. If I had to choose a published author, it’d be a toss-up between Ray Bradbury and Donna Gillespie. I’ve always loved the twists that Bradbury writes in his short stories, and the Illustrated Man was such an amazing concept (tattoos that come to life and tell a story) that I’ve been in awe of him ever since. Gillespie wrote one of my favorite books of all time (see #6) and I really love the way she takes history and fiction and melds them together into an accurate and fascinating story.

6) What is your favorite book and why?

The Light Bearer by Donna Gillespie. It’s an epic love story set in ancient Rome that reminds me a lot of Gladiator, only with a female lead. It has just about everything you could ask for in a book (an ill-fated romance, political intrigue, a historically accurate portrayal of ancient times, and lots and lots of drama and angst) and is written so well you become instantly invested in the characters. It’s the only book I’ve ever read more than once (I think I’ve read it four times now).

7) Who is your favorite singer, alive or dead, and why?

Hands down, John Lennon. Why? It’s John Lennon; do I really need to say more?

LOL! That’s a good one. There’s no way, out of the plethora of good music out there, I could choose only one.

Another hard question and another one that I can’t simply give one answer to.

Some favorites include: Bram Stoker’s Dracula, I Am Sam, Pay it Forward, Labyrinth, The Neverending Story, Almost Famous, The Blair Witch Project (one of only a few horror movies that actually scares) and The Princess Bride.

10) What is your favorite television show and why?

Absolute favorite? Hm. I guess I’d have to say Doctor Who (I mean, who doesn’t love British sci-fi shows?). Other than that I also love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Smallville, House MD, CSI (the original), Hell’s Kitchen, and American Idol.

11) Who is your favorite actor/actress, alive or dead, and why?

Favorite actor is definitely David Tennant. He’s amazingly versatile, extremely believable, has the most expressive eyes, and did I mention he’s hot? Favorite actress…hm, I don’t think I have one, though I’m a big fan of Allison Mack and Billie Piper.

12) What is the one movie/television show that you would never admit to family, friends, co-workers that you watch? Yes, I know asking defeats the point, but spill your guts anyway.

I don’t think there’s any. I’m a fairly open person and I usually share things with my family and friends, whether they want me to or not. The only exception would be Smallville when I first started watching. A good friend of mine had been begging me to give it a chance and I kept telling her I wasn’t interested in the least. So when I finally did take the plunge, I was kind of embarrassed to admit it to her.

14) Do people in your Real Life know that you read/write fanfiction?

They couldn’t not! I’m pretty sure they’re all quite bored of listening to me go on and on about my countless story ideas.

15) When did you first start reading fanfiction?

Three years ago? Maybe four.

16) When did you first get started in writing fanfiction?

Same time as #15. It was after the Stargate SG1 series finale aired. I was a huge Daniel/Vala shipper and when he made her cry during Unending it had so much angst potential that I just had to take the scene and run with it, take it someplace the writer’s hadn’t.

17) Is fanfic writing just a hobby for you or do you hope to go further with your writing?

For now it’s just a hobby. However, writing has always been a great love of mine and the idea of getting into it as a career has never been far from my mind. I have a couple of original fic ideas that I’ve been playing with the past few months and one day I might just write them. Then again, my intense fear of rejection might prevent me from actually trying to get anything published.

18) When you aren’t writing awesome fanfics, what do you do and/or want to be doing?

Spending time with my kids, watching Smallville with my husband. Picking up after my kids and my husband. *G* I also enjoy playing video games, reading, watching movies, and cross-stitching.

19) How and why did you first get interested in Chlex? What do you like most about the characters? What do you hate about them?

You can all blame Sinecure for getting me started on Chlex. I was her Doctor Who beta and she had a Chlex entry for the Porn Battle over on LJ that she asked me to take a look at. I ended up enjoying the story so much she sent me all of her other stories for the ship (and trust me, there was a lot), and I was hooked. Signed up for an account here, read nearly all of Zannie’s fics, and then I started watching the show (yeah, so I did things a little backwards, but I’ve never liked doing things the way I’m supposed to).

I’m not sure there’s really anything that I don’t like about the characters. I mean, they wouldn’t be who they are if say, Chloe hadn’t crushed on Clark for so long. Of course, depending on the day, I’m either cursing or applauding Lex’s evil side. As for what I love about them…with Chloe I think it’s her attitude and the way she smiles, with Lex it’s the way he tries so hard to do what’s right (even if his version might be slightly skewed from the rest of the world) and the little scar on his upper lip (it’s the stuff of many hot fantasies!).

20) How and why did you first get interested in writing Chlex fanfiction?

21) Is there anything while reading Chlex fanfiction that you really hate?

Chlex specific? Lana or Lois bashing. But I’m anti-character bashing period.

22) What (if any) other fandoms do you read/write for and why?

Nothing currently. Chlex has taken over my life for the time being. In the past, I’ve written for Stargate SG1, Doctor Who, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Most of them I’ve gotten into for specific ships and because of specific episodes/scenes (Stargate it was Daniel/Vala and a scene in Unending, Doctor Who it was the Doctor/Rose and the scene at the end of Doomsday), Buffy however, I was introduced to via Sinecure’s Spillow fics and ended up liking the ship enough that I decided to watch the show.

23) What type of environment do you need to write? For example: extreme quiet, blaring music, subtle background noise, etc.

I used to be able to write no matter what was going on around me; kids screaming, dog barking, husband trying to seduce me. Now I need almost complete silence. Which sucks because I like having a soundtrack for my fics but listening to them now just distracts me too much (read: I start singing along more than writing).

24) How do your ideas come to you? Do you always write them or do you let them disappear?

Depends. Sometimes it’s a scene in an episode that grabs me, begs me to do something different with it, sometimes the idea just comes from out of nowhere. Sometimes I try to force them, which never turns out good (kids, don’t do this at home). Typically I write down at least a vague summary of the idea, other times I just let it percolate a bit in my head before I do anything with it.

25) Do you plan a story from the beginning to end or start with an idea and let the chapters come to you as they do?

It depends on the type of story I’m writing. When I was still in the Doctor Who fandom, me and Sinecure did a series of stories called Glimpses, which were meant to be little peeks into the Doctor and Rose’s lives. The fics were inspired by song lyrics or a quote or even, on occasion, a picture, and I’d almost always write them in one quick sitting, with no planning whatsoever. Longer one-shots and chaptered stories I have the tendency to try to plot out every last detail before I sit down to write…a habit Cy’s been trying to break me of because it oftentimes ends up holding me back, making it more difficult for me to actually finish anything.

26) Do you ever input certain aspects about yourself into the lives of Chloe and Lex? For example: Do you have Chloe listen to your favorite song or have Lex watch your favorite movie?

I don’t believe I’ve ever done this, in Chlex fics or any others I’ve written.

27) Do you associate your writing with any songs even if it isn’t a songfic?

All the time. If it hasn’t been obvious from this interview so far, music plays a very important role in my writing and my life. I think most of my best fics started from song lyrics.

28) Do you prefer writing easy, quick stories or long, layered stories?

Again, there is no right or wrong answers here. Sometimes I prefer the shorter (though not necessarily easier) ones, other times I want something I can really sink my teeth into. Though I do have the oftentimes frustrating habit of finding ways to turn quick one-shots into huge epics that will take years to write.

29) Which do you find easier to write: dialogue or description or are the equally hard/easy?

If you’d asked me this back when I was writing Doctor Who fic, I would’ve said descriptions are the hands down easiest to write. Dialogue never came easily to me in that fandom, maybe because I’m not British. With Chlex I think it’s about equal, though Lex’s dialogue is a lot easier than Chloe’s.

30) Is there anything that you won’t write or feel uncomfortable writing?

I’m a pretty easy going person and can’t think of any idea that I wouldn’t at least consider writing. Yes, there are some things that I’m not fond of (fluff!), but if a really great plot comes along, I could very well end up being convinced to write it. Of course, when I say I’ll write just about anything, I mean within reason. I won’t write incest, and though I’ve done a few mixed fics, I’m not entirely sure I’d write pure slash (though once again, if the plot/idea is good enough to draw me in, I’d definitely consider it–the slash, not the incest).

31) What do you do to cure writer’s block? What advice can you give to new writers who might be scared to post their stories?

If it’s a specific fic that I’m stuck on, I find the best way to get beyond the block is to walk away for a bit. If it’s enough of a block that I can’t write on anything at all then I have a few various methods that I like to use:

-The five minute prompt game (usually played with a friend). Randomly select a word (I like to use online random word generators) and then write whatever comes to mind. You have only five minutes to get as high of a word count as you can (the idea is for quantity, not quality), but if the muse takes over, then it’s certainly okay to keep going (A Distempered Tango started from two separate prompt words/games).

-The one sentence story game. Pretty self-explanatory. Write a sentence that tells as much as possible without having this huge, run-on sentence. I did this just a few weeks ago to help get over my smut-writing problems, and let me tell you, it actually worked. A variation on this game would be to play it with a friend, each of you writing one sentence at a time until you have a complete story (or you could do a paragraph at a time).

-Change it up. Sinecure had me do this with a Doctor Who fic of mine. Basically you take an already finished story (you definitely want to pick a one-shot, and preferably something relatively short) and completely change some aspect of it. So if it’s a really angsty fic, change it to fluffy, or switch the POV, change one of the characters to someone else, etc.

-Implement various methods of inspiration. Watch an episode of Smallville or make a music mix that captures the mood you’re trying to create. Also, if you’re stuck on ideas, use different prompts to get you going. Again, an episode or music may help, but take it beyond that and try pictures or quotes or poetry. The key is to seek it out in whatever avenues are available to you.

For the new writer, I’m sure everyone says this but don’t be scared to post. All of us were there at one point and time in our lives so we all know where you’re coming from. Because of that, I think most people are extremely supportive and encouraging with new authors. And I can almost guarantee that no one will bite. 

32) Have you ever read someone else’s fanfic and wished you thought of the idea first?

Sometimes. Though there’s really no completely new, original story ideas anymore, sometimes I come across one that’s so unique that I’m kind of jealous…not so much that it isn’t mine (though I do have that happen as well), but that the author was able to come up with something so different.

33) Have you ever wanted someone else to write your story idea?

Yup! I have a lot of story ideas, and at the rate that I write, there’s no way I’ll ever finish them all. That and sometimes I just think that I couldn’t do the story justice, but someone else could. Plus, who doesn’t want their favorite authors to write a story for them?

34) Are reviews vital to keep you writing or will you finish a story even if you aren’t certain people are reading?

It may be very selfish of me, but if I’m not receiving any sort of feedback (or if it’s very minimal, like only a review or two per chapter), it’s very difficult to continue a story. I think everyone wants to feel that there’s a certain amount of worth in the things they do, and without that reassurance that a story that I’m writing is appreciated and being enjoyed by others, it’s hard to see a point in finishing. Besides that, my belief in my writing abilities wavers on a daily basis, and if something I’ve posted doesn’t receive any feedback, I begin to second guess what I’ve written.

35) Have you ever had a review that made you think something about your story that you never thought of before? Has a review ever made you want to make a major change to your story?

Yes on both counts.

36) How badly do you want to write for Smallville or at least rewrite some of the seasons?

Um, not at all? I don’t think I could handle the pressure of writing for a television show, not to mention the fact that I’d probably write everyone else out and it’d end up losing the Superman storyline and would no longer be primetime safe.

37) Do you see Chloe and Lex or other Smallville characters in different television shows or movies? Meaning, do you watch a movie like Star Wars and start thinking that Lex is just like Han Solo?

Not really, no.

38) What do you think AM and MR would say about your fics if they read them? How would you feel if someone from the show did read your writings?

AM and MR are reading my fics?! *runs for the hills*

Seriously though, that possibility frightens me. I freak out enough when I send a story off to be beta’d, and especially right after I post. So honestly, I’d rather not even think about what the actors would think of my stories.

39) If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? Would you use it for good or evil?

I could be altruistic and choose the power of healing like I would have a few years back, but I think if I could have any super power at all, I’d choose super speed. Obviously, I’d use it for good over evil, but mostly I think I’d be selfish. Can you imagine the transportation costs you’d save if you could just run really, really fast to wherever you needed to go? All the places you could visit that you’d never be able to afford to fly to?

Plus…I have travel anxiety. And I mean sick to my stomach, pulse racing, feels like I’m going to have a heart attack, can’t sleep for months before a trip out of town anxiety. It’s been five years since we last visited my parents (about a three hour drive from our place) because of this fear. So super speed would be a really nice power for me.

 1) If you could visit any place at any time period, where would you go and what would you do?

The future! When there are flying cars and weekend trips to Mars. 2) Have you ever met anyone famous?

Met? Not quite. But I went to a writing convention once and Frank Marshall was there… does that count? I know I’m forgetting someone here.

 3) If you could meet any famous person, alive or dead, who would it be and what would you say/do?

I actually don’t have a burning need to meet any famous people. I’d probably just make a fool out of myself anyway.

4) If you could switch lives with any person, who would you choose and why? If you want to switch with a person who is dead, we’ll assume that you wanted to live their life while he/she was alive.

Switch lives with? Hmm. I’m boring, but no one. Not because my life is so fabulous, but I just don’t see the draw of being someone famous. Besides, if I were that person, he/she wouldn’t be the person I like so much. He/she would be me, and that wouldn’t be fabulous.

5) Who is your favorite author, alive or dead, and why?

Stephen King. Hands down. He’s the master of horror and nostalgia. I just love the way he weaves scary, interesting, fantastic stories and makes you love the characters so much.

6) What is your favorite book and why?

I don’t have a favorite. Really, anything by Stephen King. Although Desperation comes to Mind. It. The Shining. Cell. That one so needs to be made into a movie.

7) Who is your favorite singer, alive or dead, and why?

Many of them. Tom McRae is in the top three. The Decemberists. The Beatles. The Rolling Stones… so many favorites. Why? Because they make fantastic music, of course. Tom and The Decemberists are about the lyrics and the music, nothing is left out of their songs. They’re catchy and angsty and full of horrible things all at once. The Decemberists have a horrid sense of humor in their music that amuses me to no end.

8.) What is your favorite song and why?

Right now? It changes all the time. Currently it’s… anything by Tom McRae really. Right now, it’s “Summer of John Wayne”… and “The Ballad of Amelia Earhart”. Also “The Girl Who Falls Down Stairs”, and “Houdini and the Girl”. Um, yeah. All by Tom McRae. All of The Decemberists’ new album as well.

9) What is your favorite movie and why?

Don’t have one. I love a lot of movies. Um, Scream is one of my top 5. I like horror films. And Sci-fi and action. Die Hard… love those.

10) What is your favorite television show and why?

I have so many, don’t make me choose. In no specific order: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who (classic and new), Angel, Farscape, La Femme Nikita, Firefly, Alias, Leverage, Burn Notice, Eureka, Dead Like Me, Veronica Mars, The X-Files, Andromeda, Dexter, Medium, Sanctuary, How I Met Your Mother. They’re all very fantastic shows in their own way. Not all of them are the best, but I love every single one of them.

11) Who is your favorite actor/actress, alive or dead, and why?

Sheesh. Got an hour? I’ve always had trouble narrowing these things down to one. Allison Mack, Michael Rosenbaum, Christopher Walken, Tommy Lee Jones, Patrick Stewart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jodie Foster, Denzel Washington… and on and on. Why. You always want to know why. I really don’t know. I just like them a lot. I could watch them read the phone book and be entertained.

12) What is the one movie/television show that you would never admit to family, friends, co-workers that you watch? Yes, I know asking defeats the point, but spill your guts anyway.

Um, Smallville? Really, this is the show that I want to cringe away from admitting to watching. Movie? So many. None that I can actually remember/think of right now.

13) Do people in your Real Life know that you are a member of NS?

Some do. Not that I go around explaining what it is. They know I belong to Smallville boards and am in the fandom online.

14) Do people in your Real Life know that you read/write fanfiction and make fanart?

Yep. No, I don’t show them. They probably suspect that I write smut, but… I don’t talk about it.

15) When did you first start reading fanfiction?

About 1999? I mention it down there in question #22. Between seasons 3 and 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It started with Spike/Buffy, but I kept seeing a bunch for Spike/Willow and I got curious. I wondered why anyone would pair those two up. I was hooked with the first one I read. I think it was called Shattered. Wow. I should find it. Anyway, I read more and more and then started writing it myself. Spike/Willow is my OTP for BtVS.

16) When did you first get started in writing fanfiction/making fanart?

About 2000 or 2001. That’s when the fanfic started. The art started before that. Really badly done banners and captioned caps for my website that is gone now, yay.

17) Is fanfic writing just a hobby for you or do you hope to go further with your writing?

It’s just a hobby. Though I dabble/dabbled with original stories for a while.

18) When you aren’t writing awesome fanfics or making fanart, what do you do and/or want to be doing?

I read, watch tv, go outside and live life to some extent. I watch movies, I see family and friends. Nothing exciting like Martian Ballroom Dancing or Planetary Judo competitions… yet. *eyes the future*

19) How and why did you first get interested in Chlex? What do you like most about the characters? What do you hate about them?

Someone on my friends list on LiveJournal talked about the show a lot. I finally decided to watch it when the 5th season was starting to air. I went through the show very quickly and by the time I got to season 3 I was a Chlex lover. Their chemistry and their similar lives just grabbed me and never let me go again. I love everything about them; the lightness, the dark, the areas in between, the protectiveness he showed toward her, even as he was being selfish. Just… everything about them is chemistry and potential.

I hate that the writers never gave them a chance on the show because they would’ve been so frelling hot. They’d have made Clark and Lana look like 5-year-olds playing house, and that scared them. Then again, I’m also glad that we never got the horrible ending and bad writing that would’ve come from the writers getting a hold of these two.

20) How and why did you first get interested in writing Chlex fanfiction and making fanart?

I got into Chlex fic rather quickly while watching the show. I stopped watching in season 5 because I couldn’t stand the crap and the Lexana headed toward the screen. And Lois. I found NS pretty early on, devoured the fic there, and started to write my own. My computer crashed and I lost it all, then moved on to Doctor Who. Came back after leaving the DW fandom and regained my fics from my old computer drive and I’m working on getting them all written and fixed and… yeah, my characterization was bad.

21) Is there anything while reading Chlex fanfiction that you really like/hate? Anything in fanart?

Yes.

22) What (if any) other fandoms do you read/write/make fanart for and why?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That’s the first fandom I got into years ago. During the break between seasons 3 and 4 I went looking for spoilers–didn’t know that was what they were called at the time–and found something called fanfic. I was hooked from that moment on. I made horrible art and started writing. Got better at both, started posting. The rest is history.

Doctor Who. That’s my second fandom that I started writing for. I loved the love story between the Doctor and Rose, and didn’t see enough of what I wanted to see on the show, so I sought out fic. Funnily enough, I stayed away from the smut fics, feeling it was just wrong… but gradually I read some. Then more. Then I began to write it myself, and became a sort of smut whore for Doctor Who.

I’ve done artwork for way too many fandoms to name here. I do icons–avatars–for nearly every show I’ve gotten into. To name a few: Alias, Veronica Mars, Charmed, Supernatural, Buffy, Angel, My So-Called Life, Dexter, Farscape, the two main Stargates… and on and on. I just love making icons and banners and wallpapers.

Depends. For fics, I can work with blaring music, tv going, talking to someone online, whatever. Same with art. Art I can do while doing anything, I don’t need a lot of focus and concentration for artwork. Fics, I go back and forth. Sometimes I need complete silence, other times, I like music to be playing, or to guide my thoughts along a certain route.

24) How do your ideas come to you? Do you always write them or do you let them disappear?

I try to write them down as ideas, then leave them and go back to what I’m working on. More often I end up writing them all out and working on 50 billion fics at once.

25) Do you plan a story from the beginning to end or start with an idea and let the chapters come to you as they do?

I get an idea, a line, a prompt word, a thought, something basic and simple, and I write from there. If it’s a long fic, I’ll plot it out to some extent, but not every little detail. That’s too limiting, and I’ve learned my lesson with that. It boxes me in and I feel like I have to follow that plan and it kills my imagination.

26) Do you ever input certain aspects about yourself into the lives of Chloe and Lex? For example: Do you have Chloe listen to your favorite song or have Lex watch your favorite movie?

Occasionally, though I can’t remember specifics. Nothing major, just a like or a dislike. A feeling of being sick when I feel sick. Little things like that. Once I had a character dream about a show that I liked and I still cringe when I think about it. I hate referencing things like that in fic. It pulls me out of the story, but I was young and stupid then.

27) Do you associate your writing with any songs even if it isn’t a songfic?

I’ve written stories based on a song, or a lyric. I often listen to a song on repeat while I’m writing a fic or chapter.

28) Do you prefer writing easy, quick stories or long, layered stories?

Quick. I tend to do quick one-shots because they’re so much easier. No answers beyond what you write are needed, no completion beyond your ending. I also like longer ones. I’m writing quite a few right now, and they’re kicking my butt. In the Doctor Who fandom, momdaegmorgan and I created “Glimpses” series, short, one-shots that showed glimpses of the Doctor and Rose’s lives together throughout years, all un-connected. I loved writing those.

The longer ones are harder for me, but I’m trying.

29) Which do you find easier to write: dialogue or description or are the equally hard/easy?

Oh, boy. Ask me at any time of the day and you’ll get a different answer each time. I have trouble with all of it. Sometimes all of it is easy, most times it’s just hard. It also depends on the fandom and the pairing. Smallville is hard. Lex is really hard.

Doctor Who… I find the Tenth Doctor easy to write, Rose and Nine? Not so much.

Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer comes so easily to me, but Spike doesn’t.

So, it really depends.

30) Is there anything that you won’t write or feel uncomfortable writing?

Mpreg. That is never, ever going to be written by me. M/M slash. Not because I’m uncomfortable with it, I just have no interest in any M/M slash pairings. I’ve written borderline F/F slash for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

31) What do you do to cure writer’s block? What advice can you give to new writers who might be scared to post their stories?

I cure writer’s block by writing. There’s no other way to get past it aside from ignoring the story and moving on to another fic. If that’s blocked too? I just sit down and make myself write.

I’d say post and feel good about yourself. No matter what, you wrote something that, hopefully, you like and are proud of, and that’s an awesome feat.

32) Have you ever read someone else’s fanfic and wished you thought of the idea first?

All. The. Time. I am always coming across fics that use ideas that I wish I’d thought of first.

33) Have you ever wanted someone else to write your story idea?

Yes! I’ve actually given away story ideas and helped plot them.

34) Are reviews vital to keep you writing or will you finish a story even if you aren’t certain people are reading?

They’re vital for my writing self-esteem. I’ll probably write regardless, but if I feel like no one is reading my stories, I get discouraged easily. I know, I know, I should write for myself, and blah, blah, but everyone feels better when they get feedback or comments or reviews. Everyone.

35) Have you ever had a review that made you think something about your story that you never thought of before? Has a review ever made you want to make a major change to your story?

Yeah, there were a few on my Doctor Who fics that made me include some things I hadn’t thought about before. Nothing major though.

36) How badly do you want to write for Smallville or at least rewrite some of the seasons?

The show would have to move to the Playboy channel if I wrote for it, and most of the other characters would be gone. I’d love to rewrite all of it with a Chlex theme, but I’m way too lazy.

Nope. Not really.

38) What do you think AM and MR would say about your fics if they read them? Or if they saw your fanart? How would you feel if someone from the show did read your writings?

Hm, I’d hope they’d be like an actor from a certain show that actually came across someone’s NC-17 fic on LiveJournal and left nice comments to the author. I’d probably end up with a restraining order though.

39) If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? Would you use it for good or evil?

I couldn’t choose. All of them. I’d use them for both. There is no purely good or purely evil. I’m a lover of the gray area… in fic anyway.

1) Who is your favorite author, alive or dead, and why?

My favourite authors are Jane Austen and her contemporary (in my opinion, with some of her books atleast) Julia Quinn. They’re both witty, funny and well-written. Yes, I’m easily pleased.

Definitely Pride and Prejudice. What’s not to love?

3) Who is your favorite singer, alive or dead, and why?

Definitely the DBSK boys, or atleast what’s left of them anyways. Simply because they can sing, dance, write their own song and ultimately because they looked good with or without their shirts on.

My favorite song is “Doshite (Why Did I Fall in Love with You)” by DBSK simply because its a beautiful song.

To both questions the answer is yes, my sister know and read some of the fanfictions I wrote.

6) When did you first start reading fanfiction? and When did you first get started in writing fanfiction?

I first discovered the magic of fanfiction in 2006 when I was randomly googling , and since then become a member of fanfiction.net, NS and many other fanfiction sites. Even before I knew about fanfiction, I always wondered what could’ve happened if the writers of the books/shows/movies wrote with different pairings in mind or completely different storyline, so naturally I started to write my first fic.

7) Is fanfic writing just a hobby for you or do you hope to go further with your writing?

To me it’s just a hobby, to relieve stress. I would love to be paid for my writings who wouldn’t, but I think it would be to much pressure for me to complete my writings and would just beat the purpose of me writing to relieve stress.

8.) When you aren’t writing awesome fanfics, what do you do and/or want to be doing?

I’m studying chemistry so I rather not do chemistry right now.

9) How and why did you first get interested in Chlex? What do you like most about the characters? What do you hate about them? How and why did you first get interested in writing Chlex fanfiction?

I was first interested in them when I watched Smallville. I like them as individual characters, and become mortified when they decided to pair off Lex with Lana. After screaming “WHY!WHY!!WHY!!” a few times, I then asked myself why couldnt they do a smart logical thing like pairing Lex with his intellectual match Chloe. And with the power of fanfiction and similarly frustrated fans around the world, the rest is history.

10) Is there anything while reading Chlex fanfiction that you really like/hate?

I really hate it when fanfiction writers make Lex into this sweet and fluffy, sugarcoated, corn-fed guy when basically everything we like about Lex is because we know he is not all those things. He is probably not evil, but bordering on gray and only has compulsions of manipulating other peoples’ lives if it serves his purpose. But then again, I’m probably guilty of the same thing. Because who doesnt love a happy ending? And you can’t give a happy ending to a bad Lex. And I blame the fairy tales that were fed to us when we were little children that only very good and almost saintly people gets a happy ending.

11) Do you plan a story from the beginning to end or start with an idea and let the chapters come to you as they do?

I usually plan the basic storyline from the beginning to the middle and then to the end so I will not get distracted. But I usually just let the filler chapters come to me as they do, so that’s why I usually get stuck writting a filler chapter.

12) Do you associate your writing with any songs even if it isn’t a songfic?

Sometimes, like my fic on this site “Letters to My Husband”, I associate it with “Doshite” by DBSK, since the melancholic melody reminds me the fic.

13) Do you prefer writing easy, quick stories or long, layered stories?

I would’ve prefered to write an easy no hassle quick story but I always end up doing long-winded, layered stories that are very hard to finish. I don’t know why. It’s like a disease.

14) Which do you find easier to write: dialogue or description or are the equally hard/easy?

Definitely dialogue is much easier to write since to me it’s much easier to put myself in the character’s place and give a response rather than description. So I usually give descriptions in form of dialogue as much as I can.

15) Is there anything that you won’t write or feel uncomfortable writing?

No. Nothing is sacred.

16) What do you do to cure writer’s block? What advice can you give to new writers who might be scared to post their stories?

When I read an encouraging review or just a review, it usually made me work twice as hard on the fic which in turn cure my writer’s block. HINT!HINT!HINT!

To new writers, don’t be scared to post your stories, because there is nothing like reading the first review for your first fic.

17) Have you ever wanted someone else to write your story idea?

Yes, I wish someone else could write all my ideas, since I’m more of a reader than a writer. So I could read the fic without the hassle of writing it.

18) Are reviews vital to keep you writing or will you finish a story even if you aren’t certain people are reading?

YES.

19) How badly do you want to write for Smallville or at least rewrite some of the seasons?

Very badly, I would trade my voodoo dolls of the writers of Smallville for a chance to rewrite the whole entire series from the beginning. It had such good potential to be something different from everything else on tv, but then when I saw the first episode, and the first scene where they introduced Lana’s character, I knew that they were going to make it like all those pink princess worshipping shows and completely ignore the stronger and less ditzy and confused female character. But I was young and naive, and continued to have faith for two seasons that they would not succumb to the pinkiness. Then, I just stop watching altogether, to save myself from all the frustrations.

20) What do you think AM and MR would say about your fics if they read them? How would you feel if someone from the show did read your writings?

MR would probably choke me and kill me for killing him too early (or not but since I haven’t met him I dont know what he would do, but if it was me, I would choke myself and kill me too ) I dont know what AM would say, but I rather not have anyone from the show reading my fic, and get any funny ideas of killing off Lex character and substituting Chloe in my fic with She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Mentioned (Lana). But wait a minute…. they already did that, in different sequence but the same nonetheless.

21) If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? Would you use it for good or evil?

I would love to have the control over space and time. If you can control time and space you basically control everything. Just imagined the things I could do. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!(cue lightning and thunderstorm, and the sounds of puppies everywhere whimpering in pain). It is safe to say I would use it for evil.
